Bluetooth 4 Specifications Revealed

Bluetooth 3.0 hasn’t been that widely adopted as yet, but that hasn’t stopped the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) from unveiling the specifications for Bluetooth 4.0.

There are a range of new functions in Bluetooth 4.0, which you can see listed below.

“The finalization of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology within the Core Specification is a monumental achievement,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director, Bluetooth SIG. “Bluetooth wireless technology can now, with the hard work of our members and our world-class qualification program, really do it all.”

• Ultra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption
• Ability to run for years on standard coin-cell batteries
• Low cost
• Multi-vendor interoperability
• Enhanced range

Bluetooth 4.0 devices will start arriving in the 4th quarter of 2010, and the new lower power functions are expected to be one of the major benefits which should get manufacturers using the standards.
